COACHELLA 2024 - DO LAB STAGE
TECHNICAL DESIGN | PROJECT MANAGEMENT | INSTALLATION PLANNING
Fritz Tech had the unique opportunity to work alongside the Do LaB team to bring this majestic stage environment to life for Coachella 2024. This artistic architectural marvel consisted of 10 ground-based structures and 3 floating sculptures, which together created a colorful shaded space for guests to gather in dance, joy, and connection.
At the time Fritz Tech got involved, there was an established conceptual design and creative team needed support to bring it through technical design, engineering, fabrication and installation, with just two and a half months before the event. Fritz stepped in as the Project Manager, first performing a detailed breakdown of all the elements of the design, and establishing a schedule and budget to bring the structures to completion. In addition, Fritz worked with the creative design team and engineer to develop the technical details, manage the drawing process, and get fabricated components into production as quickly as possible. Fritz leveraged his past experience, existing vendor relationships, and new developing ones to create a clear plan for realizing the design in the given timeline. Naturally, challenges presented themselves throughout the process, and the team navigated each one with poise, using the resources we had at hand to keep the project on track.
This was a volume project - every decision that was made meant that it had to be iterated many times in the varying versions of each structure. With the immense amount of materials used on this project, it was critical to consider efficiency, schedule and ease of installation in every decision. We were considering the methods of installation, storage, and transportation throughout the design process. A bespoke nomenclature system provided organization to all the individual unique elements. Fabric was pre-attached to cargo nets at specific locations ahead of time so the installation to the structures would be quick and efficient. The structures were all built on the ground, outfitted with rigging cables, fabric, lighting and misting before being lifted by a crane - this allowed work that would normally happen in boom lifts to pe performed the ground and from ladders. Ultimately, this removed many days from the installation timeline, saving time and money from this and future installations.
The result was nothing short of idyllic. Despite the many thousands of pounds of materials used to create these forms, they appeared to be floating in thin air. Cantilevered canopies as large as 48 feet looked out-of-this world on the Coachella landscape, and provided different perspectives from all angles. The wind gave the fabric a life of its own, flowing freely as if dancing to the music itself.
It is always a joy to see art come to life according to plan. There is beauty in the result and the process - turning an artistic concept into letters and numbers on a page so it can be fabricated, and then turning that back into the artistic environment it was meant to be. The collaborative aspects of working with so many experts in their fields shines through in the details of the finished space. Seeing the joy on the faces of the guests makes the whole experience worthwhile, as they share music and connection with each other under these beautiful creations.
